The Clinical effects of S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine (SAMe) in Acute and chronic Liver Diseases

Abstract
The hepatotonic effects of S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine (SAMe Samet¢ç) were evaluated in 41 patient is comprising 15 cases of acute hepatitis, 15 cases of chronic active hepatitis, 5 cases of chronic persiste t hepatitis and 6 cases of cirrhosis of the liver compared with common hepatotonic drugs. SAMe was inf sed intravenously at the dose of 150mg/day for 14 consecutive days. A set of laboratory analyses (SGO ~ , SGPT, Alkaline phosphatase, Total bilirubine, Total protein, Albumin) was performed before and after the treatment cycle and the laboratory data were compared with the control treatment group. The resul s were as follows:
1. In SAMe treatment group, there were statistically significant (p<0.05) improvements in SGOT a SGPT of the patients with acute hepatitis and in SGOT of the patients with chronic active hepatiti
2. In control treatment group, there were statistically significant (P<0.05) improvements in SGOT an. alkaline phosphatase of the patients with acute hepatitis, in SGOT and total bilirubin of the patien . with chronic active hepatitis and in SGOT of the patients with chronic persistent hepatitis.
3. Both in SAMe and control treatment group, there were tendency of improvements in almost a I laboratory data without statistical significance.
4. There was no statistically significant difference in the degree of improvements between SAMe treat ment group and control treatment group.
5. In SAMe treatment group, there were no symptoms, signs and abnormal laboratory data suggestin side effects of drug.
In this study, we concluded that SAMe has some hepatotonic effect and little side effect.
